Pre-race Thoughts

It’s a little after 930 PM. I’m watching  some Ultimate Fighter and it’s the night before my off road 10k race.  Tomorrow is another big day for me. I am not a long distance runner. Yeah, I think six miles is long – for now anyway.  I’m still trying to get my 5k time down.  About a month and a half ago I ran a 6 miler at Oleta and was pretty happy with my results.  Although the off road factor added scary minutes to my time I managed to come in fifth out of the males and eighth overall. Admittedly it was a small field of runners. Not bad for a natural cyclist who broke his neck eight months ago. I’d like to have similar results tomorrow.
But tomorrow isn’t six weeks ago.   It’s going to be hotter out. And my training hasn’t been what it needs to be. Up until last week my training got side railed  by working for my actual paying gig (blogging and internet marketing isn’t paying the bills YET) and helping my boss/client prepare for trial.
Now I’m doing the usual assesment of things I can no longer control.  Did I train enough? Was my diet within reasonable standards.  Am I going to get enough sleep before the race? O.K., I guess I can still control that – if I hit the sack soon enough and don’t stay up thinking a million thoughts a second like I have been doing the past few days.  I never got rid of those songs that failed to motivate me on my Ipod – and I still need to charge the damn thing.  My training this week wasn’t where I’d like it to be. I got some decent mileage in, but it was last minute and I was never able to really step it – damn stomach. Pizza today. Tisk tisk.
On the flip side, I’m way too hard on my self.  This week I was able to switch from evenings and night time runs to early morning trainings – twice and I did log some miles.  Sleep should come pretty easy given my lack of sleep last night  – social commitment last night :) and helping out at a garage sale  – and the night before – stayed up doing some web work and woke up early for my run. And of course there is the fact, that I am going to run in the woods tomorrow. I have already won, regardless of how I place.

Time for bed – and to charge my Ipod. I’ll let you know how the race went next post.
